My company gives the employees maximum of two-week paid holidays every 10 years. I got the chance this year. I wanted to spend the holidays meaningfully. Finally, I came up with the idea of studying English abroad. Studying abroad was one of my dreams when I was a university student.
I applied to study English at QQEnglish in Cebu, Philippines. It took me about seven months to tell my managers in my company, my family, as well as my business clients about my travel abroad. I’m really glad for this opportunity because it is a big event in my life.
I’ve been to many foreign countries on business trips and as a backpacker, so I am accustomed to going abroad. But still I was nervous. Before this trip, I’ve been to Philippines 3 times (Cebu once and Manila twice). When I arrived at International Airport in Cebu, I didn’t recall anything about the airport.
I stayed at mango-house dormitory on my first day.About the lessons, I felt that teacher’s pronunciation is beautiful, and teachers are flexible about teaching. For example, all students must take a reading lesson regardlessof what course you choose. When I told a teacher, “I’m bad at speaking and listening.” The teacher changed the reading lesson for speaking and listening with the reading text. All teachers like talking and I enjoyed talking with them. Finally, most of my lessons became free talking.
Students can also join many activities. I had only one free day for activities, so I joined for an island-hopping tour. 19 years ago, I read a book about CaohaganIsland which the owner wrote about, I was very impressed. When I came to Cebu 16 years ago, I tried to go to the island, but I couldn’t.
One of my dreams came true by chance. When I realized I could join the tour in QQEnglish, I was very surprised. I recalled the book and felt everything when I stayed at the island.
On the graduation day, one teacher said, “IT park was the old Cebu airport. That’s why you came here twice.” OH! I had already come here before and came here again without knowing about the old airport. I was wondering why I didn’t recall anything when I arrived at the current airport.
Students may feel very sad most especially when it is the end of our stay in QQEnglish. As a student there are rules that I needed to follow. One of these is to return my ID card to the school after I graduate. I hesitated for a while because I couldn’t enter the Skyrise 4 building any more.
On my last day in Cebu, it was sunny and the sky was beautiful and blue. I cleared my room and took many pictures of my dormitory. When I left the dormitory, I found no one except one dog. Two weeks may be not enough to master English, but my two-week stay is enough to know communication in English is fun, and enough to know how nice teachers in QQEnglish are.
